Germany to Track without Detected

The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) and Hensoldt made a new radar test. In the experiments made at the south of Germany, trials of the TwInvis passive radar system was realized.

The system was first introduced at the Berlin Air Show last April. It is also reported that the system can be effective against low radar cross-sectional area aircrafts.

It is very difficult to detect the passive radar systems that search for the distortions in the signals of civilian use, as there is no transmitting system. In the statement from Hensoldt, the Luftwaffe experiments have evaluation purpose. During the week-long tests, the company set up three passive radars at the Munich Region and 110 kilometres west of Ulm. According to the information given by the company, four passive radar sensors are enough to search the central part of Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and a portion of Italy. Sensors can detect and track a Cessna aircraft flying at an altitude of 500 feet, up to a commercial airliner flying at an altitude of 45,000 feet. The data obtained during the tests will be used in the development of the radar. Bundeswehr has been working on the development of passive radar for several years with the company Hensoldt.
