Modernization Process Ended November 5, 2019

Within the scope of the CSR 1 Program of the Republic of Korea, Type 209 submarines developed by the German HDW Shipyard were put into service. South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) handed over Chang Bogo (Type 209/1200)-class submarine Lee Eok Gi to the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) on 31 October after completing an upgrade The Korean Ministry of National Defence announced on November 1 that the 57-meter-long electric-diesel submarine, which was put into service in December 2001, was equipped with a new combat management system developed in Korea.

The modernization process included the modernization of the KRW179 submarine contract in 2014 and three submarines. Lee Eok Gi is the latest platform that has been modernized.
