The Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters announced the deployment of the Luftvärnssystem (Air Defence System) 23 to the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The decision issued on 1 July 2019 was taken by Swedish Armed Forces Supreme Commander General Micael Bydén. The island of Gotland lies around 330 kilometres from Russia's region of Kaliningrad, the headquarters of the Russian Baltic Fleet.
The system is produced by Saab and the Swedish Armed Forces trained conscripts on it in the Swedish Army’s Air Defence Regiment 6 in 2008. It was used at the time for demonstrations. and consists of the PS-90 radar and several fire units.
