US' Railgun Project Collapsed?

The electromagnetic "Railgun" project that the US Navy has been working on for 10 years collapsed? For the project, on which nearly $500 million has spent to date, the Task & Purpose magazine published an article referring the dark clouds over the Railgun project. The writer of the article, Jared Keller, discussed a possible cancellation of the project before the railgun touches down the battlefield. The US Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) has worked on the operational capability of the electromagnetic weapon. Although the use of a conventional ammunition-barrel for an electromagnetic railgun is considered to be the biggest advantage in terms of cost, the situation is now the opposite. The project, which intended to field the weapon rapidly in the front line, has come to a halt as the barrels fell into pieces with the very first fire. Compliance studies that began under the control of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) resulted in the development of barrels capable of firing up to 400 rounds, but ONR emphasized that full force could not be achieved.

On the other hand, the electromagnetic railgun needs 25 megawatts for a successful fire. This energy is only present in the Zumwalt class destroyers. The initial plan to construct 32 of this class destoyers was cut down to only three vessels due to budget constraints.

India, Russia, China and Turkey, as well as the US, prototyped this technology in the world.
