U.S. Reduces Number of Military Personnel in Middle East 18 November, 2020

In line with US President Donald Trump's directives, the number of US forces in Afghanistan will be reduced from 4,500 to 2,500, acting US Defence Secretary Chris Miller said. He also announced that the number of personnel in Iraq would be reduced from 3,000 to 2,500. Miller interpreted Trump's decision as a policy of "bringing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to a successful outcome and bringing home soldiers who bravely served."

The instruction on the troops came after Trump sacked former Defence Secretary Mark Esper.

Mark Esper insisted on maintaining the level of troops in Afghanistan to support the Kabul government during peace talks with the Taliban.
