Fire on Admiral Kuznetsov

Fire on Admiral Kuznetsov 12 December, 2019

On Thursday morning a fire broke out on the only Russian cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov" in Murmansk.

The fire is said to have been caused by welding work in the first drive sector of the aircraft carrier. The fire area has already reached 120 square meters.

The only Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" is currently in Maintenance plant "Swjosdotschka" in Murmansk and should be modernised. The ship is to get a new drive and new weapons. It is planned to complete the corresponding work in 2021.

Previously, Admiral Kuznetsov, was damaged when the dry dock where it was undergoing a refit sank, sending a giant crane crashing on to the ship. The ship’s deck was damaged.

It was at the centre of two accidents during its mission in the Mediterranean in late 2016. A MiG fighter jet crashed into the sea as it approached the ship and a Su-33 crashed on landing when a cable broke, and the plane rolled off the deck.
