Barak-8, Sea Ceptor Challenge

Barak-8, Sea Ceptor Challenge 8 September, 2016

Combat systems of the Chilean Navy's three Type 23 frigates are undergoing modernisation. Proposed systems are either the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Barak-8 or the MBDA Sea Ceptor anti-air guided weapon systems. Although Raytheon’s RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) was another option, it appears to have dropped out of contest. The companies to modernise Chilean frigates are BAE Systems (teamed with QinetiQ), IAI's MBT Division, Lockheed Martin, and Thales Nederland. A decision on the preferred supplier is expected by the end of 2016. The three Type 23 frigates will receive an upgrade or replacement of the ships' combat management system (CMS) and surveillance/target indication radar. In addition, the GWS 26 Mod 1 VL Seawolf command-to-line-of-sight point-defence missile system is planned to be replaced with an active radar or semi-active radar guided weapon system.
