Control Over Sea Enhances

Control Over Sea Enhances 21 November, 2016

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems (TALONS) prototype has completed shipborne sea trials on Sea Hunter, the US Navy’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel. Over two days tests, TALONS performed 90 minutes of flight each day, ascending to an altitude of 305 metres while testing its onboard sensor and communication systems. Further at-sea trials will follow.
TALONS is a fully automated parafoil system designed to extend maritime vessels’ long-distance communications and improve their domain awareness. The system is able to carry up to 70 kilograms of payload  between 150 to 450 meters in altitude. Towed behind surface platforms, the elevated sensor mast extends the surface-track radar’s range by 500 percent compared to its range at sea level.
