Defence shield became operational 12 May, 2016

The first land site of the European anti-ballistic missile defence system (ABMD) is declared operational. The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg and Deputy US Secretary of Defence Robert Work went on May 12 Romania Deveselu base to declare that the facility performs its tasks. This first Aegis Ashore system infrastructure is designed to detect, track and intercept ballistic missiles during their exo-atmospheric phase. The site includes a radar AN / SPY-1, a system of control and command and a vertical launching system for SM-3 missiles. The site uses the Aegis combat system 5.0 and implements the SM-3 Block IB missile. The Aegis Ashore system is a version adapted to a ground deployment of embedded system on some ships of the US Navy and allied navies. Part of system is based in Turkey Malatya Kürecik as radar station and there will be a need of an Aegis system frigate to make system fully operational.
