BAE Systems has signed a follow-on contract with US Navy to produce 28 more payload tubes for Block-V Virginia-class submarines. BAE Systems will deliver seven sets of four tubes each for the Virginia Payload Modules (VPM). Builder of the Virginia class, BAE Systems will deliver seven sets of four tubes each for the VPM. These systems will increase the payload capacity and firepower by extending the length of mid-body section of the submarine. Each large-diameter payload tube can launch seven UGM-109 Tomahawk submarine launched cruise missile. Also these systems will be able to use future missiles due to their structure. Virginia-class submarines weights 7900 tonnes and 115 meters long. Virginia-class nuclear submarines can perform strike missions on both ground and surface targets apart from anti-submarine warfare missions.
