India Accelerates Indigenous Production 7 September, 2016

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) completed the first flight of its newly developed light utility helicopter prototype yesterday in Bengaluru, India. The technical abilities of the platform were tested during 15 minute-flight. HAL, will produce 187 helicopters in the scope of the contract signed with Defence Ministry. Completely indigenous, these helicopters are in 3 –ton-class and have a single Safran HE Ardiden-1U engine. Having a seating capacity of six passengers plus two pilots, the new platform will have a weapon system and an electro-optical sensors as well as nuclear, biological and chemical sensors. Intended for such roles as air policing, urban surveillance and medical ambulance, the multi-purpose helicopters are expected to become operational between 2017-2018. HAL aims to produce five units per year.
