Japanese Company Unveils Preliminary LHD Design November 21, 2019

Japanese shipbuilding company Japan Marine United (JMU) Corporation unveiled the preliminary design of a landing helicopter dock (LHD) for the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF).

JMU's Future Landing Helicopter Dock will have five helicopters in two aircraft hangars located beneath the flight deck. The LHD will be capable of embarking up to two Landing Craft Air Cushion-like vessels in its well deck and more than 20 amphibious assault vehicles.

The LHD, will be capable of reaching a top speed of 24 kt. It is expected to be 220 m long, have a beam of 38 m, a draught of 7 m, and a standard displacement of 19,000 tonnes.
