Japan to Procure New UAV

Japan to Procure New UAV July 31, 2019

The Japanese government intends to acquire around 20 unmanned helicopters for its Maritime Self Defence Forces (JMSDF), local media reports have said. Unmanned helicopter fleet would be in response to China’s growing maritime assertiveness in the region. The helicopter model is expected to be selected in fiscal 2022, with the procurement starting in fiscal 2023, the sources said. Early warning and surveillance activities in the East China Sea are currently conducted using MSDF vessels, surveillance helicopters, P-3C surveillance planes and other equipment.
