Russian Okeanpribor Concern has developed a new underwater navigation and communications system, dubbed the Positioner, which is able to determine its own location with milimetric accuracy, and exchange data with air, surface and ground control stations in real time. The Positioner features sonar buoys with satellite communications equipment Messenger-D1M, GLONASS receiver, VHF radio station and equipment for underwater communications. The system is able to patrol areas at a depth of up to eight kilometers. The spokesperson of Okeanpribor Concern stated that the system was fully ready for deployment and the first deployment area would be near the bottom of the gas extracting offshore platform Prirazlomnaya.
