Following Japan began pursuing a new fighter aircraft to replace F-2 fleets, four Eurofighter Typhoon belonging to the UK Royal Navy landed on Misawa Air Base, Japan. The first UK aircraft to land on the country after World War II, Typhoons will participate a military drill. Although the exercise is being conducted in a way to anger China, it touches various significant points in terms of commerce. BAE Systems who lost a 42-aircraft competetion against Lockheed Martin F-35 in the past, prepares for a real show of strength this time. The company tries to get past its former failure of replacing F-4s by confirming the reports state that the F-2s would be assigned in air combat missions which F-35 were claimed to be incapable. Japanese Defence Ministry made an announcement in July 2016, to gather information for indigenious development of new fighter aircraft. The announcement also covered other countries’ possible offers for modernization and acquisition. Tokyo still considers various options such as to purchase aircraft and modernize them according to its needs, to cooperate with foreign companies to develop a new figther and to develop the aircraft indigeniously.
