SM-3 Flight Test Validates Engineering Upgrade 27 May, 2016

US Raytheon Company and the Missile Defence Agency completed a successful flight test of an improved Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IB third stage rocket motor in order to further increase interceptor reliability. The mission confirmed effective in-flight performance of the upgrade, which previously succeeded in all ground testing. The upgrade will be integrated into the current missile production line.  SM-3 is a vertically launched, ship-based missile system used by the United States Navy to intercept short-to intermediate-range ballistic missiles as a part of Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence System. On 23 April 2014, Raytheon announced that the U.S. Navy and the Missile Defence Agency had started to deploy the SM-3 Block 1B missile operationally.
