The First Operational F-35 Goes To Italy

The First Operational F-35 Goes To Italy 20 December, 2016

Following the delivery of two F-35As on 12 December, Italy became the first country outside US to receive operational F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft. Israel has also taken delivery of F-35 Adirs on the same day, however as the delivery was delayed due to heavy fog, Italian Air Force became the first country to receive the operational aircraft on its soil.

Italy is to replace its Tornado and Alenia-Embraer AMX aircraft with F-35A variant, while F-35Bs are to replace the navy’s AV-8B Harrier II Plus. Italy has a total order of 60 aircraft in both variants, with the final aircraft scheduled to be handed over in 2027.
