The US Overhauls LCS Programme

The US Overhauls LCS Programme September 14, 2016

The US Navy’s long troubled $21 billion littoral combat ships (LCS) programme’s first four vessels Freedom, Independence, Fort Worth and Coronado has been assigned as crew training and technology tests ships. Consisting of 28 vessels, LCS program compelled the navy to make a large-scale overhaul program because of increased costs and design issues. According to the original programme, three crew would have rotate between two ships, however the new plan will assign two crew to a single ship and each vessel will focus on only one module of minesweeping, surface and anti-submarine warfare. US Navy’s call for tender for multipurpose frigates is an indication that the LCS program may have short-term nature.
