The US Satellite in Orbit

The US Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite launched in June 2016 has successfully deployed its solar arrays and antennas to an operational orbit. MUOS 5 suffered issues with its apogee propulsion system during orbit raising and has not raised its orbit to the final geostationary orbit but stayed in an intermediate transfer orbit. A senior navy official stated that they had been able to execute an alternative propulsion method to manoeuvre MUOS-5 to reach a position that was operationally suitable. The satellite will undergo on-orbit testing before final acceptance by the Navy.

The MUOS is a narrowband military communications satellite system and has been designed to improve communications capabilities. There are four currently operational MUOS satellites stationed in the orbit.
