The Republic of Korea adds a new one to the defence expenditures it has recently increased. New military platforms to put in the inventory of the Republic of Korea navy.

According to the Pentagon's Defence Security Cooperation Agency, Korea will procure 12 MH-60R Seahawk from the US under the approved request. Cost of procurement is approximately 800 million US Dollars. And will be made under the scope of the FMS. Seoul will provide helicopters, as well as hell-borne surface scanning radar, communication systems, weapons and equipment. The agency announced that Korea would use the helicopter will provide deterrence against regional threats to strengthen the country's defence.


The Korean Government issued an RfP document in May for the supply of 12 anti-submarine warfare helicopters. Leonardo AW-159, Sikorsky MH-60R and NHIndustries NH-90NFH were shown as potential platforms to procurement.


Developed to perform anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and search and rescue missions, the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter was developed by Sikorsky, a US-based company based in Lockheed Martin. Depending on the mission configuration, the platform is capable of carrying three to four crew members as well as five personnel and has four weapon stations.
