US to Procure BONUS Precision-Guided Munitions from UK 15 October, 2018

The US Army is purchasing BAE Systems Bofors 155mm BONUS ammunition through a contract with the NSPA (NATO Support and Procurement Agency).

BONUS is an artillery-launched, fire-and-forget munition capable of combating any armoured vehicle. Compatible with the majority of existing artillery guns, BONUS is handled just like a conventional shell. BONUS carries two smart munitions that employ advanced sensors, enabling each to independently seek out and destroy separate targets within a radius of 32,000 square meters.

The munition also features a base-bleed design, which increases its range to a maximum of 35 kilometres when fired from a NATO L52 gun. Each of the two expelled munitions independently seeks and neutralizes its own target.  By carrying two smart munitions within the BONUS shell, its mission success per round is far greater than with traditional ammunition.

Developed and produced in cooperation by BAE Systems in Sweden and Nexter in France, BONUS is produced at the BAE Systems facility in Karlskoga, Sweden, with significant component deliveries from Nexter according to BAE’s website.

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency provides integrated multi-national logistics and procurement support solutions under a single organization for NATO allies and partners.
