Tiny Little Men Fitting into Devices: Artificial Intelligence

Many things considered ordinary in the eyes of today’s tablet children, astonish some of us. This group of people once believed in their childhood that there were tiny little men in radios and that it was their conversation heard from outside.

Let us focus on modern times… Year, 2003; place, Iraq. The US Army invaded the country; however, the US Commanders found it increasingly hard to make decisions owing to heavy bombardment of data coming from all fronts. Failing to gather precise and relevant information by effectively filtering a multitude of sources, commanders could not reach conclusions in an unfamiliar land. In order to find a solution to this problem, DARPA involved in the process as the major US institution for defence R&D projects. Accordingly, Command Centre operations would be facilitated with the introduction of a new device. The device was expected to learn all about the commander’s mission area, gather all data from this area and deliver them when necessary. Most probably, nobody had ever contemplated about tiny little men living inside this device.
Those hearing DARPA’s objectives must have bursted into laughter. However, the truth came out last year, thanks to news by Huffington Post. Only then we could learn that DARPA and International Artificial Intelligence Center had allocated a budget of $150m for a product that we may have never heard of.  An agreement was reached with the non-profit Stanford Research Institute International Artificial Intelligence Center (SRI International) for the study dubbed as CALO (Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organises).
